Robben Island Museum has a range of venues for hire, from the modern Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island
facility at the V&A Waterfront, to the historical buildings on the Island with its spiritual and symbolic resonance.
Robben Island Museum is geared to provide full-service, packaged events,
which can include:
Overnight accommodation
Corporates will find that holding an event within the Robben Island Museum lends a special integrity and gravitas. Robben
Island Museum reserves the right to refuse events which are not in line with the sanctity of its space and its symbolism.
The Guest House
Consists of the old Dutch Reformed Church parsonage and the British
Commissioner’s Residence, both built before 1900 and restored by the
Department of Prisons in the 1960s. The Victorian complex boasts superb
views and has an intimate, enclosed observation deck on the roof. The
conference room can cater for up to 60 delegates. Conference delegates
not allocated rooms in the complex can be lodged in ex-warders’ Van der
Sandt and Wyntrein houses nearby. Each house has three bedrooms, a
bathroom and a separate toilet. Capacity: 60 delegates, Style: Victorian
architecture and ambience, Functionality: White boards, flip charts,
overhead projectors, laptop presentation connections and technical support.
The John Craig Hall
Situated in the village area and built during the Second World War, this
solid, practical hall can accommodate up to 200 delegates. Closeby is
situated the 1841 house and two other break-away facilities that can
accommodate up to 20 persons each. Functionality: white Boards, flip
charts, overhead projectors, laptop presentation connections.

Nelson Mandela Gateway
The Robben Island experience begins at the Nelson Mandela Gateway to Robben Island at the new Clock Tower Precinct,
V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. The Gateway is Robben Island Museum’s “front door”, a mainland symbol of the importance of
the Island for South Africa’s young democracy.
Boardroom
- Capacity: A 20-seater
- Style: Modern, comfortable, practical.
- Functionality: Air-conditioned. Overhead projectors, laptop projectors,
standard conference equipment.
The Auditorium
- Capacity: 120-150 seats, raked.
- Style: warm wood panels – floor, walls and ceiling. Modern design.
- Functionality: Superb acoustics. Several front rows can be removed to
create an even larger performance space. DVD/VHS/CD projector and
screen, lighting board and sound systems. Laptop presentation connections.
