Robben Island - Public Heritage Programmes
Robben Island Museum is described as the ’university of life’ for it is here where strategies for a future society based on tolerance, respect and non-racialism were nurtured and implemented by political prisoners. The emphasis on education, debate, and on lifelong learning is a testimony to the fight for justice and education, and is a key to Robben Island’s role as a heritage site and its human rights discourse. Robben Island Museum Education department is mandated to exercise considerable responsibility to interpret, curate and conserve this tangible and intangible heritage. This exercise is done through carefully researched programs, directed at different audience groups with different learning abilities.
