Vision, Mission, Values and Principles
Vision
Robben Island Museum (RIM), operating as a site or living museum, aims to develop the island as a national and international heritage and conservation project for the new millennium. In managing its resources and activities, RIM strives to maintain the unique symbolism of the island, nurture creativity and innovation, and contribute to socio-economic development, the transformation of South African society and the enrichment of humanity.
Mission
In implementing its vision, the RIM constantly focuses on the following core essences:
- Maintaining the political and universal symbolism of Robben Island.
- Conserving and managing the natural and cultural heritage and resources of Robben Island.
- Promoting RIM as a platform for critical debate and life long learning.
- Managing RI in a manner that promotes economic sustainability and development.
Values and Principles
We believe:
- Our people are the source of our strength and our most valuable assets. They bring integrity, commitment, dedication, creativity, innovation, skills and life experiences to the task. We value our diversity and acknowledge potential in all our people.
- The Robben Island Museum must protect the integrity of Robben Island through the conservation and management of its heritage and resources, balancing national, African and international requirements in the process.
- Our unique products and services are the end result of our efforts. They should be quality driven and offered with knowledge and enthusiasm so that we can best serve our customers and clients worldwide and give them value for money. We recognise that the quality of our products and services will also determine the public image of the Robben Island Museum.
In its operations:
- RIM strives to deliver the highest quality of work, services and programmes in a sustainable and cost effective manner.
- RIM recognises the importance of our visitors and clients and strives to give them a unique experience and the best possible services.
- RIM values its staff and recognises their contribution and performance as critical to the effectiveness of RIM. Staff empowerment and participation is our way of life. We believe in teamwork and value commitment. We treat each other with respect and strive to put our diverse skills and experiences to the best use.
- RIM will actively strive to counter all forms of unfair discrimination, including sexism, racism and ageism. RIM follows a non-secretarian approach and as a cultural institution values its autonomy from political interference.
- RIM is a learning institution, which embraces learning processes in all its work, and values development and training internally and externally.
- RIM operates in a local, national and global environment and will strive for dynamic and mutually beneficial relations with a wide range of partners and suppliers. It is committed to providing access and opportunities to historically disadvantaged communities.
