Alpha 1 was a pump house used for pumping sea water for the island since World War 2 and has also being used as an abattoir and butchers shop. Between 1975 and 1983 the site was known as the ‘kak tip’ because all waste went there. In the early 1980’s the site was also converted for the use of officers as a recreation centre. From 1983 to 1985 a radar station was situated here and the bar area was referred to as the ‘radar huisie’. Currently it is used as a coffee shop.
