The Bandieten quarters was referred to as ‘Die Kraal’, suggesting that the shed used for the sheep in the 1400s was also used to house prisoners. Earliest impressions of the living conditions of prisoners have been gleaned from a painting of the Island in the 1770s, done by Colonel R.J.Gordon. The painting shows some buildings, separated from, but next to the Postholder’s accommodation, which presumably was the ‘Bandiete huisje’ referred to in records of that time. It is also presumed that European convicts were housed in the ‘Bandiete huisje’ and Indiaanen prisoners in ‘Die Kraal’.
