Banishment 1939 – now

The Airstrip was built during WWII.
In the years that the Island was used as a MSP by the apartheid government, the airstrip was used to transport prison officials to and from the prison. The imprisoned Rivonia trialists were brought to the Island on a chartered Dakota airplane. Today, the airstrip is used to transport VIP guests such as visiting Heads of State.
Part of the Airfield today.
