Banishment 1941 – 1991

Drying seaweed at the Bamboo Factory.
The degaussing station built by the Navy during World War 2 on the eastern shore of the Island was converted to a bamboo factory during the MSP period, which processed kelp seaweed into a fine powder. The Namibian prisoners were made to work in the factory under very poor working conditions.
The factory was located between the Ou Tronk and the shore just north of the rectangular harbour buildings.
Remains of the Bamboo Factory.
