Banishment 1960 – 1991

Group of people standing at Jetty 1 in Table Bay Harbour.
Jetty 1 at the V & A Waterfront became part of the political imprisonment landscape when the Island was declared a Maximum Security Prison (MSP). It was from here that the political prisoners were ferried to the Island. Family members visiting prisoners on the Island were also transported from here. In the early days it was a zinc structure and did not have secure cells so prisoners were chained to the benches. A double story building was erected in the 1970s that contained offices, waiting rooms and barred cells.
Released Political Prisoners arriving at Jetty 1 in 1991.
