Banishment 1961 – now

The Visitors Centre as it is today.
This is at the edge of the harbour and was used for the prisoners’ family and lawyer visits. The visits were non-contact i.e. visitors sat on one side and the prisoners on the other, separated from each other by plate glass with communication being conducted through a sound system. From 1983, Category A prisoners were allowed contact visits. These took place in small rooms at the Centre.
