Prison 1946 – 1970

Although held in harsh conditions and forced to endure extreme physical hardship, such as excavating stone and building roads, political prisoners succeeded, psychologically and politically, to transform the prison into a symbol of struggle and liberation.
After WW2, a small prison was established to hold about 60 long term prisoners sentenced to hard labour. These prisoners maintained the roads, kept the island clean and worked as gardeners and domestic workers.
